HaranHaran was a city in northern Mesopotamia where Abraham's father Terah settled and died. Abraham left here at God's call to go to Canaan. Jacob later fled here to escape Esau and worked for his uncle Laban for twenty years, marrying Leah and Rachel.
HazerothHazeroth was a wilderness encampment of the Israelites during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It was here that Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses regarding his Cushite wife, leading to Miriam being struck with leprosy as divine judgment. The location served as a significant stop where God defended Moses' unique prophetic authority.
Heavenly SanctuaryThe Heavenly Sanctuary is the true tabernacle in heaven where Christ serves as our High Priest, described primarily in Hebrews. The earthly tabernacle built by Moses was merely a copy and shadow of this heavenly reality. Here Christ entered once for all with His own blood, securing eternal redemption. He continually intercedes for believers before the Father's throne, making the heavenly sanctuary the place of our ongoing access to God's grace.
HebronHebron is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their wives are buried in the Cave of Machpelah here. David was anointed king of Judah in Hebron and ruled from there for seven years before moving the capital to Jerusalem.
Holy of HoliesThe Holy of Holies was the innermost and most sacred chamber of the Tabernacle and later the Temple in Jerusalem. Separated by a thick veil, it contained the Ark of the Covenant and represented the dwelling place of God's presence among His people. Only the High Priest could enter, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). When Jesus died on the cross, this veil was torn from top to bottom, symbolizing that access to God was now open to all through Christ.
Jabbok RiverThe Jabbok River is a tributary of the Jordan River, famous as the place where Jacob wrestled with God throughout the night. After this encounter, Jacob was renamed Israel ("he struggles with God") and the place was called Peniel ("face of God"). The Jabbok also served as a boundary between territories.
JerichoJericho, one of the oldest cities in the world, was the first Canaanite city conquered by the Israelites after crossing the Jordan River. Its walls famously fell after the Israelites marched around it for seven days as commanded by God through Joshua. Jesus later passed through Jericho, healing blind Bartimaeus and dining with the tax collector Zacchaeus.
JerusalemJerusalem is the holiest city in Judaism and Christianity, central to the biblical narrative. King David captured it and made it his capital, and his son Solomon built the First Temple there. It was the site of Jesus' crucifixion, resurrection, and the birth of the Christian church at Pentecost. The city has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times throughout history.
Jerusalem TempleThe Jerusalem Temple was the center of Israelite worship, built on Mount Moriah where Abraham nearly sacrificed Isaac. Solomon constructed the First Temple around 960 BC, which Babylon destroyed in 586 BC. The Second Temple was rebuilt after the exile and later expanded by Herod the Great into a magnificent complex. Jesus taught in its courts, cleansed it twice, and prophesied its destruction, which Rome fulfilled in AD 70. The temple represented God's presence among His people and prefigured Christ, the true temple.
JezreelJezreel was both a city and a fertile valley (also called the Valley of Megiddo or Armageddon). King Ahab had a palace here where Jezebel orchestrated Naboth's murder for his vineyard. Jehu killed Jezebel here, fulfilling Elijah's prophecy. The valley has been a battlefield throughout history and is associated with end-times prophecy.
Jordan RiverThe Jordan River is the most significant river in biblical history, flowing from Mount Hermon to the Dead Sea. The Israelites miraculously crossed it to enter the Promised Land under Joshua. Naaman was healed of leprosy by washing in its waters. Most importantly, John the Baptist baptized Jesus in this river, marking the beginning of his public ministry. The river symbolizes transition, cleansing, and new beginnings.
JudahJudah was the southern kingdom formed after the division of Israel following Solomon's death. With Jerusalem as its capital, it was ruled by the descendants of David. The kingdom lasted from around 930 BC until the Babylonian conquest in 586 BC. The prophets Habakkuk, Jeremiah, and Isaiah ministered during its final years, warning of coming judgment.
