RomeRome was the capital of the Roman Empire and became a significant center of early Christianity. The apostle Paul wrote his most theological letter to the church in Rome and eventually traveled there as a prisoner. Both Peter and Paul are traditionally believed to have been martyred in Rome. Paul's Letter to the Romans is foundational to Christian theology, addressing salvation, grace, and the relationship between Jews and Gentiles.
SamariaSamaria was the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel and later became the name for the entire region between Judea and Galilee. After the Assyrian conquest, the population became mixed, and the Samaritans developed their own form of worship. Jews and Samaritans had deep hostility. Jesus broke social barriers by speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well and telling the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Sea of GalileeThe Sea of Galilee, also known as Lake Tiberias or Lake Gennesaret, is a freshwater lake in Israel where much of Jesus' ministry took place. Jesus called his first disciples, fishermen Peter, Andrew, James, and John, from its shores. He performed many miracles here including walking on water, calming a storm, and the miraculous catch of fish. The Sermon on the Mount was delivered on a hillside overlooking this lake.
ShechemShechem was an important Canaanite city where Abraham first built an altar after entering the Promised Land. Jacob purchased land here and dug a well. Joseph's bones were buried here after the Exodus. Joshua gathered the tribes at Shechem for a covenant renewal ceremony.
ShilohShiloh was the religious center of Israel for over 300 years, housing the Tabernacle and Ark of the Covenant. Hannah prayed here for a son and later brought young Samuel to serve. The Philistines later captured the Ark from here. The prophet Jeremiah used Shiloh's destruction as a warning to Jerusalem.
ShunemShunem was a village in the Jezreel Valley of northern Israel, located near Mount Gilboa. It is most famous for the wealthy Shunammite woman who showed hospitality to the prophet Elisha, building a room for him on her roof. When her son died, Elisha raised him back to life - one of the most dramatic miracles in the Old Testament. Earlier, Abishag the Shunammite had served aging King David. The village demonstrates God's reward for those who honor His servants.
SidonSidon was an ancient Phoenician port city, often mentioned with its sister city Tyre. Queen Jezebel was a Sidonian princess. Jesus visited the region and healed the daughter of a Syrophoenician woman. Sidon was known for its skilled craftsmen and maritime trade. Paul stopped briefly in Sidon on his voyage to Rome.
SodomA city of the Jordan plain that Lot chose for its well-watered land, destroyed with Gomorrah by fire from heaven. Abraham had pleaded for it, and the Lord agreed to spare it for ten righteous men who were never found. Its site is disputed: this marker follows the southern tradition, on the eastern escarpment of the Dead Sea.
Spring of HarodThe spring at the foot of Mount Gilboa where Gideon's army was reduced from twenty-two thousand to three hundred. The Lord thinned the ranks twice, lest Israel claim the victory as its own: first the fearful went home, then all but those who lapped the water from their hand.
SuccothSuccoth (meaning "booths" or "shelters") refers to multiple locations. In Egypt, it was the first stopping place of the Israelites during the Exodus. East of the Jordan, Jacob built a house and made booths for his livestock at Succoth after reconciling with Esau. Gideon punished the elders of Succoth for refusing to help him pursue the Midianites.
SusaSusa (Shushan) was one of the capitals of the Persian Empire. The events of the book of Esther took place here in the palace of King Xerxes. Nehemiah served as cupbearer to King Artaxerxes here before being sent to rebuild Jerusalem's walls. Daniel also had visions here.
TaberahTaberah was a location in the wilderness where the Israelites camped during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. The name means 'burning' and commemorates God's judgment when fire from the Lord consumed the outskirts of the camp due to the people's complaints and murmuring against Him.
