The tower of Babel GEN 11:9
A people travelling eastward settle in the plain of Shinar and discover brick and bitumen, which let them build higher than stone allows. They say to one another: let us build a city and a tower whose top reaches heaven, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the earth. God comes down to see the city, confuses their language so that no one understands his neighbour, and the work stops. What they feared most is exactly what happens to them.

13And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.
The place

Babylon was the capital of the Neo-Babylonian Empire and a symbol of human pride and rebellion against God. King Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem and took the Jews into exile here for 70 years. Daniel and his friends served in the Babylonian court. The Tower of Babel, where God confused human language, was built in this region. In Revelation, Babylon symbolizes worldly power opposed to God.
