The queen of Sheba

The queen of Sheba 1KI 10:1

Old TestamentKingdom See Jerusalem on the map

She comes a very long way with camels carrying spices, gold and precious stones, having heard a report she does not believe. She tests Solomon with hard questions and he answers all of them. When she has seen the house, the food on his table, the seating of his officials and the way he goes up to the house of the Lord, there is no more spirit in her. The half, she says, was not told me.

The passage

1And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions.

2And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bare spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.

4And when the queen of Sheba had seen all Solomon's wisdom, and the house that he had built,

5And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel, and his cupbearers, and his ascent by which he went up unto the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her. {attendance: Heb. standing} {cupbearers: or, butlers}

Jerusalem is the holiest city in Judaism and Christianity, central to the biblical narrative. King David captured it and made it his capital, and his son Solomon built the First Temple there. It was the site of Jesus' crucifixion, resurrection, and the birth of the Christian church at Pentecost. The city has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times throughout history.
