Prayer for Work

For a job you are looking for, a job that weighs on you, or one you want to do well

People pray about work for very different reasons: a search that drags on, an interview tomorrow, a boss who makes Monday hard, or simply the wish to do the job well. The Bible speaks of work from its first pages, where Adam tends a garden before anything goes wrong, and Moses ends Psalm 90 asking God to establish the work of our hands. This prayer covers those situations; keep the lines that fit yours and leave the rest.

The prayer

Lord, I bring my work to you as it really is. You know whether I am waiting for a door to open, dreading the one I walk through each morning, or simply tired. You made us to work, and you know how much of a life it takes up.

If I am looking, open a place where I can earn my bread and be useful, and give me patience for the silence between applications. If I already have a job, give me the skill to do it well, honest words with the people around me, and fairness where I am treated unfairly. Where a person makes it hard, soften what can be softened and protect me from what cannot.

Teach me to work as if for you and not only for a wage, and to rest when the day is over instead of carrying it home. Keep my worth in your hands rather than in a title or a payslip, so that neither success nor a bad week can tell me who I am.

Establish the work of my hands, Lord, and let it do some good. Amen.

In one breath

Lord, you know my work and what it costs me. Open what needs opening, give me skill and honesty in what I do, and keep my worth in your hands. Amen.

Verses to hold on to

And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

Psalms 90:17Moses ends his psalm with the request this prayer borrows: that God would make the work of our hands last.

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

Colossians 3:23-24Written to servants with no say over their masters, it moves the meaning of work from the employer to the Lord.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Matthew 6:33-34Jesus does not deny that we need to eat; he tells the anxious where to look first, one day at a time.

How to pray it

  1. Name the actual situation, the company, the interview date, the colleague, rather than praying about work in general.
  2. Pray on the way in: the commute or the minute before opening your laptop is a natural place for it.
  3. Include the people you work with by name, especially the one you find hardest.

Make it your own

Say what you are living, in a few words, and receive this prayer written for your situation.
