Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed GEN 19:24
Told that the city is about to fall, Abraham does not accept it quietly. He bargains with God, down from fifty righteous men to forty five, to thirty, to twenty, to ten, and each time the answer is the same: for their sake I will not destroy it. Ten are not found. Two messengers pull Lot and his daughters out by the hand at dawn, fire falls on the cities of the plain, and Lot's wife looks back. The place has stood ever since as the Bible's picture of a judgement nobody could call unfair.
The passage
GEN 19:24 · Read the passage22Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. {Zoar: that is, Little}
23The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. {risen: Heb. gone forth}
24Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
25And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
26But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
27And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:
28And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
The place

A city of the Jordan plain that Lot chose for its well-watered land, destroyed with Gomorrah by fire from heaven. Abraham had pleaded for it, and the Lord agreed to spare it for ten righteous men who were never found. Its site is disputed: this marker follows the southern tradition, on the eastern escarpment of the Dead Sea.
