Joseph made governor of Egypt

Joseph made governor of Egypt GEN 41:41

Old TestamentPatriarchs See Egypt on the map

Pharaoh dreams of seven lean cows swallowing seven fat ones, and no one in Egypt can tell him what it means. The cupbearer finally remembers the Hebrew in the prison who read his dream two years earlier. Joseph is shaved and brought up from the dungeon, gives the interpretation and the policy in the same breath, and by evening wears the signet ring and rides in the second chariot. The famine he foresaw will one day bring his own brothers to his door, bowing, without recognising him.

Egypt plays a significant role throughout the Bible, from the time of Abraham to the flight of the Holy Family. Joseph was sold into slavery there and rose to become second to Pharaoh, saving his family during famine. The Israelites were enslaved in Egypt for 400 years before God delivered them through Moses in the Exodus. Jesus' family fled to Egypt to escape King Herod, fulfilling the prophecy "Out of Egypt I called my son."
