New TestamentGospels See Egypt on the map

Warned in a dream that Herod means to search for the child and destroy him, Joseph gets up in the night and takes mother and child into Egypt. They stay there until Herod dies. Matthew sees in it the oldest road in Israel's memory run backwards: out of Egypt I called my son. The holy family spends its first months as refugees in the country their nation had fled.

18But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

Egypt plays a significant role throughout the Bible, from the time of Abraham to the flight of the Holy Family. Joseph was sold into slavery there and rose to become second to Pharaoh, saving his family during famine. The Israelites were enslaved in Egypt for 400 years before God delivered them through Moses in the Exodus. Jesus' family fled to Egypt to escape King Herod, fulfilling the prophecy "Out of Egypt I called my son."
