Mary Magdalene and the other women arrived at dawn with spices, worried about who would move the stone for them, but found it already rolled away. Jesus's body was gone, and the grave clothes were lying there with the head cloth folded by itself. Two men in dazzling clothes told them not to look for the living among the dead.

The tomb was located near Golgotha, the same site where Jesus had been crucified during the final days of his passion. The passage itself focuses on the tomb rather than giving further geographic detail, but tradition places it close to the crucifixion site. Peter and John are remembered in the Gospels as running to this tomb after hearing the women's report.

At the time, a woman's testimony carried no legal weight in court, so naming them as the first witnesses is not how someone would invent a convincing story. This detail is often pointed to as evidence that the account reflects real events rather than later fabrication. It also shows that Mary Magdalene held a significant place in the earliest tradition about the resurrection.

Some assume the stone was rolled away so that Jesus could step out, but the text only says the women found it already moved before anyone looked inside. The folded head cloth sometimes gets read as a hidden message or symbol, though the passage simply notes it was set apart from the other grave clothes. Christians read these details differently, some seeing them as meaningful signs and others as plain, incidental facts.
