The agony in Gethsemane

The agony in Gethsemane MAT 26:39

New TestamentPassion See Gethsemane on the map

He takes the three with him into the olive grove and tells them his soul is sorrowful to the point of death. A stone's throw further he falls on his face and asks three times for the cup to pass, each time ending the same way: not as I will, but as you will. Luke, who was a doctor, notes the sweat like drops of blood. He finds the three asleep each time he comes back, and wakes them for the last time as the torches arrive.

The passage

37And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.

38And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou {wilt}.

39And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

40Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed {is} willing, but the flesh {is} weak.

41He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

42And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.

43And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

Gethsemane

Gethsemane, meaning "oil press," was a garden on the Mount of Olives where Jesus often went to pray. On the night of his arrest, Jesus agonized in prayer here while his disciples slept. Judas betrayed him here with a kiss, and soldiers arrested him, beginning his journey to the cross.
