Zacchaeus Tax Collector who Met Jesus

Zacchaeus served as chief tax collector in Jericho, overseeing other tax collectors and becoming wealthy through his position. As a Jew working for the Roman government, he was despised by his fellow countrymen who viewed him as a traitor. His wealth came at the cost of social isolation and spiritual emptiness.

When Jesus passed through Jericho, Zacchaeus desperately wanted to see Him but was too short to see over the crowd. Overcoming his dignity and social status, he climbed a sycamore-fig tree along Jesus' route. This act demonstrated his genuine desire to encounter the famous teacher despite public humiliation.

Jesus looked up and called Zacchaeus by name, inviting Himself to stay at his house that day. This unexpected personal invitation from Jesus shocked both Zacchaeus and the watching crowd. The fact that Jesus knew his name and chose to associate with him publicly marked the beginning of Zacchaeus' transformation.

In response to Jesus' acceptance and love, Zacchaeus publicly declared his intention to give half his possessions to the poor and repay anyone he had cheated four times the amount. This dramatic gesture demonstrated genuine repentance and a complete transformation of his values and priorities.

Jesus declared that salvation had come to Zacchaeus' house that day, affirming his faith and transformation. Jesus emphasized that Zacchaeus was truly a son of Abraham, restoring his place in the covenant community. This encounter perfectly illustrated Jesus' mission to seek and save the lost.
