Xerxes (also called Ahasuerus) was the Persian king who married Esther after deposing Queen Vashti. He was manipulated by Haman into decreeing the destruction of the Jews but reversed this decree after Esther revealed Haman's plot. He ruled an empire from India to Ethiopia.
