Prayer of Thanksgiving

A prayer to thank God for what he has given, named one thing at a time

Of the ten lepers Jesus healed, one came back to say thank you, and Jesus noticed. Gratitude is the prayer that asks for nothing, and it is often the one we forget when the answer has already come. This prayer names what has been received and gives it back to God; use it as it is, or change the words to fit your own list.

The prayer

Lord, I come to you today not to ask for anything, but to say thank you. I have received far more than I noticed, and I do not want to let it pass without turning back to you, like the one leper who came back.

Thank you for this day, for breath and food and a place to rest. Thank you for the people who love me, and for the ones who are hard to love and teach me anyway. Thank you for the prayers you answered, and for the ones you answered differently from what I asked.

Give me eyes that see your goodness in ordinary things, and a heart that does not take them for granted. When I am tempted to count only what is missing, remind me of what is here.

Everything I have came from your hand. I give it back to you with gratitude, and I trust you with what is still to come. Amen.

In one breath

Lord, thank you for what you gave me today, the seen and the unnoticed. Keep my heart grateful, and let me not forget to return to you. Amen.

Verses to hold on to

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

Psalms 103:2David tells his own soul not to forget: gratitude begins with remembering.

And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

Luke 17:15-16One of the ten healed lepers turns back to thank Jesus, and that return is the whole point of the story.

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

1 Thessalonians 5:18Paul asks for thanks in every circumstance, not for every circumstance, which leaves room for hard days.

How to pray it

  1. Name three specific things from today rather than thanking God in general.
  2. Include one thing that was hard, and thank God for what he did in you through it.
  3. Say the prayer out loud or write the list down; gratitude that stays vague fades quickly.

Make it your own

Say what you are living, in a few words, and receive this prayer written for your situation.

  1. Your words
  2. Your prayer

Say it in your words

A few words are enough. The details are what make the prayer yours.
