Scripture is explicit

Is it a sin to ask who created God?

No. It is the question every thinking person eventually reaches

A vast starfield spiralling into depth, with no horizon and nothing to limit the scale.

In short

No. Nothing in the Bible forbids the question, and Scripture itself keeps circling what it means for God to have no beginning. The classical answer is that the question assumes God is the kind of thing that gets created, and the whole claim is that he is not.

What the text says

Psalms 90:2

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

The phrase is doing the work. Everything that is created has a point before which it was not; the claim here is that God has no such point, which is why asking who made him does not compute.

Often brought inIsaiah 40:28

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

Isaiah answers a people who suspect God has run out. The reply is that he does not have the properties - tiredness, limits, a beginning - that the question assumes.

The counterweightRomans 11:33

O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

Paul ends his longest argument by admitting the bottom is out of reach. Reaching a limit is treated as the right conclusion, not as a failure of faith.

What Christians agree on

Every Christian tradition holds that God is uncreated and without beginning. All of them also hold that asking about it is legitimate; the church has produced whole libraries on precisely this question.

Where they disagree

The classical philosophical tradition

The question contains a category error. To be created is to be contingent, and God is defined as the one thing that is not - so 'who created God' is like asking what is north of the North Pole.

Exodus 3:14

Those who stress the limits of knowing

The honest answer is that we do not know and cannot. Scripture asserts that God has no origin without explaining how, and that silence is deliberate.

Deuteronomy 29:29

Questions worth asking

  • Am I asking because I want an answer, or because I am testing whether the question is allowed?
  • Does an unanswered question here actually unsettle what I believe, or only what I expected to be able to explain?
  • Who could I ask this out loud, without it becoming about my faith?

Children ask this and are often hushed, which teaches them that some questions are dangerous rather than difficult. It is not a dangerous question. It is the point at which thinking about God gets genuinely interesting, and no one in Scripture is ever rebuked for arriving there.
