Is it a sin to play violent video games?
No verse addresses it, and one passage is quoted by everyone

In short
Scripture says nothing about games. The argument is built on what you deliberately put in front of your mind, and on whether depicting something is the same as endorsing it - a question the Bible itself raises, since it contains a great deal of violence described in detail.
What the text says
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Often brought inPsalms 11:5
The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.
Loving violence is named as a spiritual condition. Whether playing a game constitutes loving violence is precisely what is disputed.
The counterweight1 Corinthians 10:23
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
Paul's formula for disputed things: permitted is not the same as beneficial. It refuses to turn a matter of wisdom into a rule.
What Christians agree on
What you steep your mind in shapes you, and cruelty enjoyed for its own sake is a problem. Nobody claims the Bible mentions games, and nobody claims the medium is beyond question.
Where they disagree
Those who apply Philippians directly
You choose what to put before your eyes for hours at a time. Simulated violence is not neutral, and treating it as harmless because it is fictional avoids the question.
Those who distinguish depiction from endorsement
Scripture describes atrocities in detail without endorsing them, and so do novels and films Christians read freely. The test is what you love, not what you look at.
Those who focus on effect
The real questions are time, temper and what it displaces. A game that eats your week and shortens your patience has answered the question without any verse.
Questions worth asking
- How much of my week does this actually take?
- Am I calmer or sharper with people after playing?
- Would I be comfortable if someone I respect watched me play for an hour?
The Bible contains battles, assassinations and a great deal of blood, described plainly. That does not settle the question, but it does mean a Christian objection to depicted violence has to be more careful than it usually is.
