Christians read it differently

Is it a sin to not go to church?

One clear verse, and what it is actually asking for

An empty wooden pew in warm light with a hymnal left open, and an open door beyond.

In short

One passage speaks directly to it, and it asks Christians not to give up meeting together. What it does not do is set a rule about attendance, name a penalty, or address someone kept away by illness, work or fear.

What the text says

Hebrews 10:25

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

The command is about not abandoning the gathering, and the reason given is mutual encouragement. It is addressed to a community, which is why it reads differently from a rule about attendance.

Often brought inActs 2:46

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, from...: or, at home

The earliest picture of Christians meeting is houses and meals as much as a building.

The counterweightMark 2:27

And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

Said about religious observance turned into a burden. It cuts against reading Hebrews as a rule to be enforced.

What Christians agree on

Christians hold that faith is not meant to be carried alone, and that gathering is for the sake of the people gathered.

Where they disagree

Catholic teaching

Sunday attendance is a grave obligation, excused by real impediment.

Hebrews 10:25

Many Protestant traditions

The command is to gather, not to attend a service; house churches and small groups meet it.

Acts 2:46

A pastoral reading now widely shared

Someone driven away by harm is not the person Hebrews addresses.

Mark 2:27

Questions worth asking

  • Are you staying away from a building, or from people?
  • Is there something that happened there that has never been dealt with?
  • Is there one person you could see this week?

If you stopped going because of what was done to you there, the verse people quote at you was never written about your situation.
