The Jabbok River is a tributary of the Jordan River, famous as the place where Jacob wrestled with God throughout the night. After this encounter, Jacob was renamed Israel ("he struggles with God") and the place was called Peniel ("face of God"). The Jabbok also served as a boundary between territories.
